The types of idli are- plain idli, stuffed idli ( stuffed with potato filling) and oats idli It is served with two to three types of chutneys in green banana leaf. Menu vadas are essentially savory donuts made with black gram, coconut and spices. The word medu means soft. This dish is also known as Urad dal vada, garelu, uddina, ulundu vadai. It is also called sambhar vada. My love for south indian dishes are never ending.

It is often prepared during festivals and occasions. It has been recogonised as one of the best street food seets in the world by taste atlas. It is a delightful treat for those with a sweet tooth!
Savory Snacks - Murukku and Pongal:
South Indian cuisine isn't just about sweets. Savory snacks like murukku and Pongal provide a delicious contrast.
The batter is given a spiral shape and then they are deep fried in oil and is often seasoned with various flavours, making it a delicious and crispy snack. It is made during the time of diwali and other festivals , it is a often made in large quanties as it is tradition to share with friends and family. It could be enjoyed on its own but people also accompany it with tea or coffee. Murukku is gluten free, a suitable snack for those with gluten sensitivities or celac disease. It could vary in shape and size, For example, in Tamil Nadu it is often made in spiral shape while in kerala it is known as ACHHAPPAM, and has flower like design. Making murukku is a time honored tradition during special occasions in south india households. It is an excellent travel snack. People carry it during long jouneys or on picnic and outings.
Pongal is made up of rice and moong dal , either to a sweet or a savory dish. Ven pongal also known as khara pongal is the name of the savory version,which is tempered with gheee, black pepper, cumin and hing. rice is boiled in milk. It's prepartion is the main custom associated with PONGAL festival. In normal days it is genrally eaten as a breakfast food. It could be accompained with coconut chutney.
Sakkarai Pongal is made with rice, jaggery, cardamom, cashew, ghee, raisins and nuts . It has a delightful balance of sweet and aromatic flavours. It is not just a dessert but it holds a cultural and religious significance in Tamil Nadu during festivals. It has a creamy and porridge like consistency. It has a soft and smooth texture. Sakarai pongal is a wonderful representation of rich and diverse culinary tradition of south india. It is genrally enjoyed during the festival of Pongal.
